PLEDGE LETTER

March 20, 2003

Dear Family and Friends,

Hi, my name is Jillianne and I'm a 10^th grade student at Bayside High school. I enjoy soap operas, swimming, crafts, and doing volunteer work. I'm in Beta Club, Teen Court, and I'm also the President of the Sophomore Class. I've also had a disease called Lupus for the past 6 years. It's my dream, that with your help, we can raise enough money to get a step closer to a CURE for Lupus!!!

Thank you to everyone who supported "Steps For Lupus 2001". I raised over $8000. It was awesome! I couldn't have done it without so many generous people! This huge success was mainly due to Ben Milana, who sadly passed away a year ago. He was my best friend, my adopted grandfather, and is now my guardian angel.

For those of you who don't know about Lupus, let me clue you in on it. Lupus is an autoimmune disease which can affect your joints or any organ in your body. Instead of your immune system fighting infections, it actually fights against your own body. Symptoms vary from joint pain, fever, or a rash, to kidney, heart, or brain involvement. Lupus can have an affect on any part of your body.

Some people with Lupus don't have many symptoms and can live normal lives. For others, Lupus can be much more serious; it can even be a fatal disease. In fact, Howie D (of the Backstreet Boys) lost his sister due to Lupus. Since then, Howie and his family have worked vigorously to raise money for this incurable illness, by starting the Dorough Lupus Foundation. The DLF uses their money for research, awareness, and for lupus patients who cant afford medical care.

Now its time for Steps For Lupus 2003! This year, instead of 4 different events, there will be ONE BIG WALK! It will be held on April 26^th, 2003 and will start at Bayside High School in Palm Bay. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the walk will start at 10:00 a.m. We plan to walk 1.5 miles, up to a local festival "Bayside Lakes Present School Fest 2003 at the Majors", (near the Publix on Bayside Lakes Blvd.), which is a way for our area to show appreciation to our local schools. There will be booths, entertainment, games, refreshments, and much, much more! We'll even have a Steps For Lupus 2003 booth, so stop by and visit us!
This is where YOU come in! I need all the help I can possibly get. If you are able to participate in the walk, try to collect as many sponsors as possible. Make sure when you register; you have your sponsor form and the donations. If you are unable to attend Steps For Lupus 2003, please consider sending in a donation. I raised over $8,000 with Steps for Lupus 2001, this year I want to raise over $10,000!!!

I hope this letter finds you in good health. This year has been a little rough for me. I started cytoxan, a chemotherapy medication, to see if it would help put my Lupus into remission. I've had 6 treatments so far and they make me feel icky for a bit, but in the long run I hope I will be better. I have high hopes that I will be able to be in school full-time next year, instead of only half a day.

Please support Steps for Lupus 2003. You can get sponsors & attend the walk on April 26^th. You can also encourage your friends to join & get sponsors. If you can't attend, you can still get sponsors, or make a donation yourself. Every little bit helps! Please help me & everyone else who has Lupus, to get a step closer to a CURE.
